Are you interested in the future of Britain? Richard’s first book was Patriots, a history of national identity in Britain. In September 2014, the BBC asked him to comment on the subject in the wake of the Scottish Referendum.

In 2005, Richard travelled to Ghana to interview Peggy Appiah, daughter of Labour Party statesman Stafford Cripps whose marriage to a Ghanaian leader shocked Britain in the 1950s. He wrote her obituary for The Times a year later.
